Peloponnesian War notes from Tuesday (17.08)
Causes:
- Corcyra: a colony of Corinth fought & won a battle when Corinth attempted to take control of the city
- Corcyra asked for and received help from Athens. Their combined fleet defeated Corinth in a major battle.
- Potidaea: another Corinthian colony had joined the Delian League but decided to leave. Athens attacked so they asked Corinth for help.
- Corinth claims this is self-defense of a colony& the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta, has to help them.
- Sparta warned Athens to stop
- Athens attacked Megara, another member of the Peloponnesian League for sheltering run away slaves
- Sparta marched its army into Attica, destroyed the farms & besieged Athens.
- A plague broke out in Athens, amongst those that die are Pericles & his whole family.
- For ten years Sparta burns Athens' farms, Athens attacks her allies by the sea. In 423 the Athenian Leader, Cleon, & Sparta leader Brasidas die in the same battle resulting in a peace treaty.
